Macally USB AC Charger for iPod (White) Review

Macally USB AC Charger for iPod (White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
USB Ac Charger for Ipod Device MCALLY has engineered this device with features which are of particular use to commuters and travelers. First of all, Mcally's slim design increases packability in pockets, briefcases or iPod travel cases. The charger's A/C plug folds back into the body of the charger further improving ability to stow the charger when not in use. The slim design has additional advantage of enabling the unit to be plugged into surge suppressors or wall outlets where clearance is at a minimum. Although Mcally does not include a charging cord, the iPod's USB cord permits sufficient link to whatever type of iPod you may have. Some may argue the cost of Mcally's iPod charger (roughly same as Apple's charger) to be excessive. I would argue that advantages of Mcally's charger offset the cost, especially if you need an iPod charger for commuting or travel. Please note that appropriate travel adapters may be needed outside the U.S.

Cool Components PS-500 Universal Transformer 3V-12V 500mA Review

Cool Components PS-500 Universal Transformer 3V-12V 500mA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This very poorly calibrated piece of "MADE IN CHINA" junk permanently DESTROYED my laptop computer's USB port.
I plug my small portable audio cassette tape player with its USB connection into my laptop computer, as a music audio source. My tape player is powered by the computer's USB port when the tape player's two AA batteries are not installed, or a 3-volt, 500mA AC/DC power adapter (which "Cool Components PS-500" is SUPPOSED to be) can also be used to power the tape player.
I have been successfully playing my tape player through my computer's USB port for several weeks, but the FIRST TIME that my tape player used THIS "Cool Components PS-500" for power (on its 3-volt setting), the computer immediately displayed a "POWER OVERLOAD" warning pop-up window and the USB port instantly died (the computer manufacturer's Tech Repair Help Line tried to fix or reset the USB port, but it would not reset -- the tech rep said the USB port is permanently destroyed).
So then I wondered what went wrong, so I tested all of the "Cool Components PS-500" voltage settings with a voltage meter to see why it happened, and the meter showed the following: "Cool Components PS-500" settings: 3 volts (actual is 5.6 volts = almost double the prescribed voltage -- the excess (double) power ran THROUGH my tape player's circuit INTO my laptop's USB port and FRIED the computer's USB port).
"Cool Components PS-500" other settings: 4.5 volts (actual is 8 volts). 6 volts (actual is 10 volts). 7.5 volts (actual is 10 volts). 9 volts (actual is 14 volts). 12 volts (actual is 19 volts).
Adding insult to injury, after permanently ruining my laptop computer, Seller [...] wants me to pay the return postage to get refund, AND write a separate letter to them requesting a refund AFTER I return the junk to them at MY expense. Absolute DISGRACE !!! WARNING !!! AVOID BOTH !!!

I got this power supply on an emergency basis to replacde my missing Dell Inspiron 8200. Inspiron 8200's require a 90w power supply. I picked this one over others beacuse it explicitly said that it suppoerted the 8200. While my 8200 will charge the battery from it, it will NOT run at 90w power, only 75w and it gives me a boot up warning that the power supply is inadequate. Back to the store...

Working perfect on my HP Compaq 8710p - needed a 120watt. Comes with a ton of tips but the one on it is the one you need right out of the box. Only con is my laptop still tells me to connect to a more powerful power supply for some reason. Runs cool for hours of use. Delivery was ultra fast, just took a few days.

The problem with the converter is that is will not fit into the round European outlets. One needs an additional adapter plug that extends the "square" converter to fit into the round receptacle. This is not a serious problem since these "extenders" are inexpensive. But have one on hand since the converter can not be used w/o one.

Plug Adapter for USA Flat to Europe Round Pin Review

Plug Adapter for USA Flat to Europe Round Pin
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Instead of these, I recommend round adapters for US 3-prong as well as 2-prong plugs. Why? Because they have a better, more snug fit on both sides. They fit more snuggly in the Euro/Schuko socket. These flat 2-prong adapters in my experience tend to have a looser connection or even fall out of the socket - esp. if yours is a heavy cable or if it has one of those AD/DC converters at the plug end pulling down on the adapter.
On the other hand, flat 2-prong adapters are slightly more compact and fit better in your pocket. So if you want to get one, I recommend you at least find one that is rubberized or has ridges or a lip to make it easier to pull out of the socket. (The cheap ones made of hard slippery plastic are the worse). And make sure you don't overpay. There are dozens of merchants selling these; make sure you don't pay more than $2/pc including shipping.
Lastly, keep in mind, the schuko socket fits most European countries but not all - most notably UK, and Italy which have their own peculiar sockets.

1PORT Poe Injector Ac Input 802.3AF and Cisco Supported Review

1PORT Poe Injector Ac Input 802.3AF and Cisco Supported
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Although Power over Ethernet (PoE) was once only a term used in IT departments of businesses, this technology is being implemented in more and more consumer electronics and is slowly becoming known in homes with a computer network as well. The concept is quite simple; running data and low voltage power across a single cable. While this may not immediately sound very interesting or important, PoE allows the installation of electronic, networked devices, without the need for an AC power source at the installation site. This is especially useful for products like network security cameras, VoIP telephones, and Wi-Fi amplifiers. There are two primary types of PoE power sourcing equipment (PSE). PoE endspans, which are Ethernet switches with built-in transmission circuitry, and PoE midspans, which are Power over Ethernet products that stand between a regular Ethernet switch and the device needing power. This review is for the PD-3001/AC single port PoE Injector, made by PowerDsine (now owned by Microsemi), which is a PoE midspan device.
I recently found the need to add PoE capabilities to my home network when I decided to install some new network security cameras around the house. I wanted ceiling mounted dome cameras, and most of the units I found were PoE cameras. I knew about PoE technology but had never had any direct involvement with it. I quickly decided that I did not wish to purchase an expensive PoE network switch for my home, so I needed to find a low cost alternative. That is when I found the PowerDsine 3001/AC PoE Injector. This device allows me to run a data cable from my Ethernet switch to the PoE injector, the PoE injector plugs into an AC wall outlet, and then another Ethernet cable comes out of the injector and runs to my PoE camera. This way I only have a single cable running to each of my cameras, rather than having to run separate power and data cables.
The important thing to know, when purchasing a PoE product, is to make sure that it complies with the IEEE 802.3af power distribution standard, from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). IEEE802.3af provides for 48 VDC over 2 of the 4 available pairs on Cat 3 and Cat 5 network cables, with a maximum current of 400 mA, for a maximum load power of 15.4W. You shouldn't have to worry much about the actual specifications as long as you make sure that both PoE devices on each end comply with the IEEE 802.3af standard. It is usually noted on the product itself or in the product specifications. And speaking of specifications, here are the technical specs. of the PowerDsine PD-3001/AC PoE Injector:
* No. of Ports = 1
*Data Rates = 10/100 Mbps
*Output Power Voltage = -48
*User Load Power = 15.4W
*AC Input Voltage = 90 to 264 Vac (auto switching)
*AC Input Current = 0.5A@110-220 Vac
*AC Frequency = 47 to 63 Hz
*Dimensions = 2.4" (W) x 1.2" (H) x 5.7" (L)
*Weight = 1.1 lbs.
*Indicators = AC Power (Green), Channel Power (Green)
*Connectors = Shielded RJ-45, EIA 568A and 568B
* Operating Ambient Temperature = 32 ° to 104 °F
*Operating Humidity = Maximum 90% non-condensing
*Compliance = IEEE 802.3af standard or legacy Cisco powered devices
It should also be noted that the PD-3001/AC model is a 10/100 network device, and does NOT offer Gigabit transfer speeds. If you are looking for a Gigabit network PoE injector, you should consider the PowerDsine PD-3001G/AC device. All of the specifications for the two devices are the same, other than the data rates supported.
The PowerDsine PD-3001/AC performs its function well, but I am a little concerned about its electronic durability a bit. I installed a couple of the PD-3001 injectors in my home back in May of 2008, and all was well until a strong thunderstorm blew in a couple of months ago. There was a fairly close lightning strike, which caused some brief Wi-Fi signal issues in my home, but everything else seemed to be working OK. However, within a couple of hours I found that my PowerDsine injectors were no longer working. The LED power lights were not even illuminated. I tried plugging them into different outlets but nothing helped. I'll admit that I just had them plugged into basic power strips (I know, I should have had them plugged into surge protectors), but everything else in my house was still functioning just fine. So I purchased a couple of replacement PD-3001 injectors and a couple of APC surge suppression power strips to plug them into, and I had my cameras back up and running in no time. However, about three weeks ago we had an unexpected power outage, which was not caused by a storm. Power was out in my entire neighborhood and it took about 3 hours before power was restored. When the power came back on I found that one of the two PD-3001 injectors was not working (again no LED power light). Again I tried it in different outlets but could not get it to respond. My local retailer was out of stock so I had to order a replacement online. It arrived a couple of days later, but when I plugged it in I found that the new unit did not work at all. I sent back the defective unit and was eventually able to acquire one locally. This new replacement has been working OK but I am now a bit nervous about how long these are going to last. They're not extremely expensive but they aren't cheap either. I don't have any technical data to backup my suspicions but I am thinking that these PoE injectors are very sensitive to any sort of power fluctuations.
Overall I am very happy with the performance of the PowerDsine PD-3001/AC PoE Injector. They provide the power and data pass-through that I need for my Panasonic PoE network security cameras. However, I now cringe every time a light flickers in my house, afraid that any slight power drop or spike is going to burn out one or both of my PoE injectors. I have now moved one of the PoE injectors to a UPS system, so it should still function on battery backup if the power goes out again. At least then I can unplug the unit myself and hopefully avoid any fluctuations that may burn out the injector. I have found very few reviews online for the PD-3001/AC, so I have no idea if others have run into this same sort of issue. On the other hand, maybe I just had a few defective units, or just suffered from really bad luck. Since the PowerDsine PD-3001/AC PoE Injector performs its function as expected, I can recommend the product as a cost effective way for anyone to add PoE capabilities to their home or small business network. However, I highly recommend that anyone using these injectors should plug them into a high quality surge protector, or into a UPS system that has Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR).

Average Reviews:

This product works exactly as stated and it is the perfect price. For the price, I would give it 5 stars. But since it is a review of the product, I only gave it four stars.
Pros...
#1 Cheap
#2 Has most common connectors
#3 Voltage divisions by 1.5v
Cons...
#1 Weight. Copper is heavy, but it is not something you would want to carry around in your backpack.
#2 Egg Design. It sticks up too high so it blocks the outlet above it.

Let me first state I'm reviewing the product in the picture.
I actually ordered the other product by Dekcell: B000vniw9c
but received this one instead(b000emwfuw). If the picture is accurate.
The one I ordered was a whole .04 cents less!
I'm gonna go on a rampage!
The other one had a 10 watt higher output though this one does not seem to affect my computer, by the lower amperage.
The other one was supposed to find the right voltage on it's own. This one has a switch. 16v,18v,19v, or 20volts. It says not to change to voltage when it is plugged in, and it would be unlikely but not impossible to actually move the switch by accident. I plan on putting some tape over the switch so it cannot move from 19v.
This one in the above description says it operates off 100 to 240 volts, but the picture shows the 12vDC ciggy style plug. So somewhere there is a problem with the accuracy of the info listed.
It would be difficult to connect the adapters with reverse polarization as one pin is larger than the other, and I don't know of any device that has the + as the outer barrell, and the inside as the - side.
It's got a bright blue power on LED on the well ventilated unit.
It's got a red incandescent bulb on the ciggy male plug. This end gets a little warm. The Brick itself does not get nearly as warm as the one that came with my Laptop.
The ciggy plug itself is almost twice as long as what your used to, so if your have a lid which closes closely over the plugs, it will not close over this one.
I got this product because my 800 watt inverter I was using to power the laptop is loud and inefficient. I seem to be consuming about 1 amp to 3 amps less per hour than the stock brick powered by the 800 watt coleman inverter, averaging just over 1 amp. So I'm using about 25% less energy using this product.
Which is why I bought it.

Cables Unlimited PWR-LAP-120H 120W Universal AC Laptop Charger Review

Cables Unlimited PWR-LAP-120H 120W Universal AC Laptop Charger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this directly from Cables Unlimited and it shorted out in about a month. There is a switch to set the voltage input and it slides very easily and therefore doesn't stay set on the right input. When it shorted out, I called the company and they said that I had a lifetime warranty, but they needed me to fax the purchase order and then I would have to wait for authorization. As I needed my computer right away, I instead spliced it into another old adaptor I had and a month later the part that plugs into the back of the computer broke off in the computer. This might be an OK product if you never move your laptop, but it is quite poorly and cheaply made, and not very well designed. Don't buy it!

My Meade classic LX200 power supply was ruined in a recent storm (roof blew off the whole observatory, but everything was salvageable except the hard-to-replace power supply). I needed an 18V DC power supply which could provide 2+ amps and had the right sized pin to fit my LX200. I searched high and low, far and wide. This particular model was the only one I came across which fit the bill. The only concern I had was polarity, which turned out to be a moot point - the supply tells you itself when the polarity is wrong! I attached the black-ended pin, plugged it into the wall and the LX200 control panel, turned on the LX200 and the blue light on the power supply started pulsing - and the ammeter on the LX200 didn't register any current. So I switched the pin around to reverse the polarity and tried again. Bingo! Perfect. Telescope now completely operational again with an outlay of less than $50. I highly recommend this power supply as a replacement for the Meade LX200 classic 18V DC supply.

Motorola T505 Bluetooth Portable In-Car Speakerphone Review

Motorola T505 Bluetooth Portable In-Car Speakerphone
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought a total of 5 (yes five) different Bluetooth speakerphones to test on my car visor and operate with my Sprint HTC Touch phone. Each unit has flaws and two are unusable in my opinion when used with the Sprint Touch. Your results may differ.
Here are the units I tested:
The Jabra SP5050, Parrot Minikit, BlueAnt Supertooth Light, BlueAnt Supertooth II and Motorola T505. I chose these units based on the positive user reviews on the Amazon site.
Now how they perform when paired with my Sprint HTC Touch...
BlueAnt Supertooth Light - Works good with few complaints. Connects automatically every time. Has mini USB for charging which is exactly the same as my phone. OK speaker volume (but the volume may cause an echo on the other end). I like how turning the unit on or off is accomplished by pushing the mic in/out. Magnetic clip is nice.
BlueAnt Supertooth II - Works good but doesn't usually connect automatically with the Touch. I need to push the talk/end button to connect. Best speaker volume (you can turn the volume too high which may cause an echo on the other end). This unit can be used with the visor up or down since the mic can swing totally open. Aesthetics might not appeal to some. I really like how turning the unit on or off is accomplished by swinging the mic in or out. Magnetic clip is nice.
Jabra SP5050 - Maybe the best aesthetics with very slim size. Easy to understand if it's on and connected with the alert tones. Very light unit and did I say how slim it is?
Terrible low volume with my Sprint Touch! The volume is unusable for highway speed driving and is a deal killer compared to the other units. This cannot be corrected using the volume on my phone as it's at max too! I was so hopeful for this unit.
Parrot Minikit - Works great sometimes. Has great speaker volume. Sometimes cannot get it to connect and sometimes locks up. I believe this is an issue with the Minikit and the Touch combination as I also tested a Parrot LS3200 color built in unit with the exact same terrible results. Unusable!
Motorola T505 - Nice aesthetics. Connects automatically every time. Has mini USB power connector exactly the same as my phone. Very good speaker volume and I love the option of using the FM transmitter with my car stereo for even better sound and volume. No complaints from people on the other end and they never heard an echo like the BlueAnt. I haven't tried using the music player but that isn't why I bought it. I prefer the Supertooth II on/off mic switch over the Motorola back of the unit location. This is by far the best unit for use with my Sprint Touch and the one I'll keep using. Works fantastic!
Now I'm giving away the other units to friends.
