Plantronics M22 Amplifier Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased the amplifier M22 with the compatible plantronics 261N headset (must be their brand, or else you wont be able to plug it in to the amplifier).
At first, I could not use it since it was not compatible with my phone system. You need to be able to unplug the handset from your phone, and it cannot be wireless and the number pad cannot be in the handset.
So, I bought a new phone. But the amplifier was not compatible with the new phone, and even when I adjusted the settings, I could not get a clear dial tone.
I tried to reach technical support and when I told them that even though I adjsted the settings, I still could not get a clear dialtone... well, they hung up on me! So, I researched online and finally found a web page that said that if you adjust the settings and still cannot get clear sound, then your phone is not compatible.
Today I exchanged the second phone and bought a third phone that FINALY was able to give me a cear dial tone, but I still hear a lot of static on the line and even at maximum volume the sound does not sound louder than the regular phone volume without the amplifer. But I am able to regulate the volume of my voice through the phone, so that helps.
I just could not believe that the amplifier does NOT come with a power adapter. It has already been an inconvenience for me. Today was the first time that I use the headset (despite the static) and on my first phone call the head set began making a beeping sound that alerted me to change the batteries! ON THE FIRST CALL!! (I installed the batteries when I purchased the amplifier a week ago, but the amplifier was unplugged and stored away while I tried to find a compatbile phone).
So, it looks like tonight I wont be able to work AGAIN. Tomorrow I will get new batteries, and try to find a power adapter that will go with the amplifier, and buy a fourth phone that hopefully will be compatible with the amplifier AND give me a clear line!
I just dont know what to do! Apparently, it is just a matter of trial and error... It would be great if they made a list of phones that give the best sound with their product.
Im an interpreter, my voice is my business, and I need an amplifier that will allow me to raise the headset volume so that I can hear my clients clearly. Since we make conference calls to offices in several different states at the same time, our voice volume goes down as it passes through the several different phone systems. So I ordered the amplifier hoping to hear my clients better and be able to raise my voice level through the amplifier and not have to shout into the microphone.
The product information made it seem like a great system, and I wont give up on it just yet!
I just recommend that customers order the power adapter along with the amplifier, get the headset that THEY recommend, and then be prepared to find a compatible phone. Yours might work, but I have not had good luck... yet... will try again with a new phone on Monday.

Motorola T305 Bluetooth Portable Car Speaker Review

(More customer reviews)I was looking for a replacement for my bluetooth headset when I started looking at bluetooth speakerphones. After doing some research, I was looking for the following:
* No installation - I wanted to use it in multiple vehicles/locations
* Reasonable price
* Trusted brand
* Good sound quality
* Easy to use
I am happy to report that the T305 does a good (sometimes great) job of satisfying my requirements. Here's a look at how it has performed:
Setup - Upon opening the box, there are really two things to do: insert the visor clip which is easily secured and use the car charger that comes with the unit. While the instructions said that charging could take up to two hours, my unit fully charged in about 30 minutes. Once complete, simply power on the device, and it automatically enters pairing mode. I was able to find it with my LG VX-9900 (see my review) with no problems at all.
Use - Coming from a background of using headsets, I must say that I cannot imagine going back. I really like not having anything hanging on my ear (and sometimes inserted in my ear depending on the headset). This model also seems geared toward the people who use headsets because the operation is very similar. One nice thing is that the power button is separate from the multi-function button. With my 9900, I am able to initiate voice dialing from the speakerphone and with the 9900 set to auto-answer, calls are automatically transferred after 2 seconds. The volume controls on the sides are easily accessible and operate similar to most headsets. I never have to touch my phone at all so it truly is hands-free.
Call Quality - All of the above is meaningless if the calls don't sound good, right? Well, have no fear. The call quality for both parties is better than any headset that I have ever used - and I've used six different ones over last 2 years. Some of this has to do with positioning. In the Texas heat, most people have their AC on a high setting. Unfortunately, most headsets are positioned directly in line with the air flow. However with a visor clip-on of this speakerphone, this is not the case. Add to that the noise canceling technology, and the people on the other end hardly know that they are on speakerphone at all. On my end, the volume is more than adequate. It's really a simple matter of physics - the speaker is bigger here than it is on a headset.
Cons - So what's the catch? As I mentioned earlier, the device only ships with a car charger. I ordered (rather cheaply) a wall charger to compensate for this. While it was annoying, it wasn't the end of the world. Others have mentioned the flashing blue light. I have to admit that the first time I was driving in the dark, it was initially distracting. However, I got used to it rather quickly, and I don't notice it anymore. I would compare it to getting a new car that has a loud turn signal. You notice it a lot at first, but you learn to tune it out. Also, it does not have a display, but then again, neither do headsets. Finally, I use it in a similar manner to a headset. I take it with me when I get out of the car, and I power it off between uses. It's not an integrated speakerphone so it isn't tied to your car's power supply like more sophisticated (and expensive) models. None of these are deal-breakers for me.
Bottom line - If you are looking for a good alternative to bluetooth headsets, and you intended use pattern will be similar to that of a headset, then this is what you are looking for. It has great quality, and it's easy to use.

(More customer reviews)This first thing I noticed when I was installing a hard drive into this enclosure what how well everything fit together. I've tried something like 10 different types of enclosures and most of them always had something that didn't quite go together right without a little force. Not the case with this. The only plastic parts in this unit are the back plate and the power button. If those were metal and someone told me this was a product by Apple, I would believe them.
I purchased 10 of these for a media project, and there wasn't a single problem with any of them. That consistency really impressed me, and I plan on sticking with this model for future buys until I can no longer find it. They are definitely more expensive than the average enclosure, but the quality justifies it in my mind.
Take a look at the customer images I submitted to get a good idea of how this comes apart and goes back together.
UPDATE 12/8/2010: I've owned these enclosures for over 2 years now and I still love them. I haven't had a single issue with them yet. I was originally using them exclusively with firewire but now use several with eSATA and am extremely pleased with the speed difference. I still recommend them.

Thinkpad Mini Dock Series 3 (433710U) Review

If you already have the older ThinkPad Advanced dock, the Series 3 adds 2 more USBs and loses most legacy ports. However, the older 'Advanced Mini-Dock' will support both the T60's and the T400 and, in my view, the Series 3 is not worth an upgrade unless you MUST have those 2 extra USBs or are totally annoyed by the presence on the back of a large parallel port for printers that no one is using any more.
If you are shopping for your first dock, by all means, get the Series 3.EXPANDED DISCUSSION AND RATING
I am still using the Lenovo ThinkPad Advanced Mini-Dock - port replicator ( 250410U ) at home with my T400 after it served me well for some 3 years with a T60 but my employer decided that the new T400 deserved a new docking station and, here it is, the Series 3 dock on my desk.
The Series 3, finally, breaks with the past to some extent and no longer provides the old school serial, parallel, round keyboard and round mouse ports that are taking up space on the old 'Advanced' and almost no one is using these days. Instead, the add a couple extra USB ports - and you just can't have too many USBs these days - and more video support.
To those unfamiliar with the ThinkPad style mini docks, this is as a minimalistic design as possible while adding to the 'port replicator' expectations by even adding a few extra ports - see below for features.
- Verified to be compatible with the T60/61 and T400.
- Small form factor.
- Easy docking with the left corner alignment design.
- Button for turning the laptop on/off or awaken it if it's plugged in while sleeping.
- Laptop eject button.
- Physical lock with physical keys (2 keys) to provide some security.
- Will dock the laptop even when it's using the larger 9-cell battery (standard on the T400).
- Built in opening allowing for the hot air to exit via laptop's lwft side back vent.
- 3 (THREE) video ports: VGA, SingleLink DVI-D and DisplayPort
- Microphone in and headphone out analog audio ports
- RJ-45 Ethernet port
- 6 (SIX) USB ports that should give you a total of 9 USBs if you count the ones on the laptop.
- 90W, 100-240V to 20V, 4.5A AC adapter
- 1 yr. limited warranty (be prepared to pay for shipping if it breaks)
I found this dock very easy to use and I found that it greatly simplifies my professional life. With 2 docks, one in my office and one in my home office I can take advantage of normal size keyboards and big screen monitors whenever I want them and it only takes 2 seconds to pop my laptop in an out of the dock. The dock will allow for any 2 of the 3 monitor ports to be used at any given time.
For a product that brings so much convenience I can only grant 5 stars.

However, I have to recommend others to go a different direction when considering a home stereo dock.
You can choose to buy this product. If you do, be prepared to shell out significantly more than the cost of this unit to be happy in the end.
The only thing that come with it are the adapters for different Ipod models. At a minimum you will need to spend on the following add ons: wireless IR remote ($30), and a charger ($30-$40) as well as the RCA cable adapter to connect to your hone stereo ($10-$20+)
The Kensington includes all of the following: Stereo Dock, IR remote control with (2) AAA batteries, 7ft. gold-plated RCA output cable, AC adapter. It is designed to take all ipods as well.
You literally will spend double after on all the Apple add ons.
Its not a coincidence that the customer rating on the Kensington is 4 1/2 stars vs. 3 stars for Apple's dock. Most people recognize great values when the see them.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this adapter approximately four months before the cable broke just below the tip that plugs into the laptop. The reason it broke so easily is that the power wires themselves are tiny, and the retractable spring-spools tend to keep the wires taught at a right angle from the tip. Use the adapter daily, and it is getting bent back and forth at that point. Eventually, the copper inside breaks.
The really unfortunate part of that is that I could have salvaged it with a simple splice and repair, if it weren't prone to breaking right at the tip, where you can't strip back enough insulation to reveal a useful amount of copper to reconnect.
But you shouldn't have to repair a power cord you paid good money for (I paid $59.99 for this item, by the way). It should last a long time. This one is just too flimsy to recommend at any price.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this product with the intention of using it for charging my laptop while on the road. According to the product's spec sheet, it is rated to supply 140-watts of continuous power (and 150-watts peak) and it is marketed as being a suitable power supply for laptops. Unfortunately, when I plugged my laptop (which uses a 90-watt charger) in to the unit it would overload and trip the surge protection after a few seconds. I was thoroughly unamused.
Additionally, I found this nugget from a review on Newegg:
"The problem with this unit is that neither the hot or the neutral plug on the unit are referenced to ground. In other words, the neutral actually has a potential of 60v above ground. This can lead to some shocking situations. The ground leg of the inverter is just a dummy hole -- there is no actual ground.
In layman's terms, the electrical design of this unit is very poor and would never achieve household electrical standards. I can't figure out how they are allowed to manufacture and sell this unit especially when they advertise it for use with laptops."
And upon further inspection, I can confirm that this is accurate, which could possibly be the reason why my laptop charger overloads the unit despite the fact that the unit is supposed to be able to supply 140-watts continuously.
This unit does seem to work well for small electronic devices, but I cannot recommend this unit for any electrical device that draws much power or uses a 3-prong connector.

(More customer reviews)I use this scanner at work everyday to scan dozens of vendor invoices into our new electronic filing system. We use it with Adobe Acrobat, and the results are excellent. You have many choices of DPI to choose from, so if you need something extremely sharp, you can easily get it, or if you just need something basic, you can get that as well. It also does double sided scanning (although you have to go in and change settings each time you need to do that). One of my co workers just got one for her scanning needs here at work. I am considering buying one of these for home to scan all my overflowing paper into electronic files. It even scans little receipts from the gas station well! This gets a big thumbs up from me.
