(More customer reviews)I anticipated having to move data off 5 HDDs from an old WinXP SP3 tower to a new Dell Studio 15 Laptop. I'd researched several Universal USB HDD Adapter kits and choose the NewerTech kit. What arrived was a generic kit without the NewerTech "black block" with lights for power and data transfer confirmation. Instead, the power converter block had one green light that was not coming on. I plugged it in and tried to power up the first EIDE FAT32 HDD with no luck and a "burnt wire" smell soon filled the room. My Dell Laptop was PNP installing (2 drivers) and confirming USB Bridge connection to the adapter block with both IDE/EIDE and SATA connections with Win7 OS. After a couple of hours of frustration I called the seller and they eventually confirmed a replacement was coming with pre-paid return USPS shipping. The 2nd kit arrived 8 days later, this time the power converter was "green" and 4 of my 5 drives powered up and data was transferred fine at about 25-26MB per/sec. I think, but don't know this for sure, but the first drive I plugged into the kit was "killed" by the bad power converter block.
This is a generic kit, all parts made in China. I lost about 75GB of music and video downloads, a collection that was the envy of friends... gone. The seller did right by me, but I feel there was a "bait n' switch" as now, after notifying Amazon about the situation, the "featured" kit photo is NOW the generic kit not the NewerTech kit. I now have to contact the download sites, 4 or 5 and see if I can't get them to make my download history available to download once again, this will takes hours, patience and email... I wished I gotten the NewerTech kit first.
Finally, this is not a kit for "techies" who don't know what they are doing because there are NO instructions. You must follow standard HDD installation sequence by first having the USB cable connected, then connect the SATA/IDE cable and then last connect the power. Have the drive level or flat, don't move it around or even roughly handle the HDD when powered up, you can damage the drive or damage sectors. Good luck...

Cooler Master Slim 95 Watt USB Notebook Adapter (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)Bought this in December 2009. I knew about this product long before, I saw an announcement on one of the technical review sites and immediately got interested. I traveled with this adapter overseas and it proved very useful powering (and charging) my Sony VAIO Z690 laptop and Motorola DROID smartphone. I liked the fact that power plug is 2-prong - AC cable is much thinner and lighter than a 3-prong version would be. Tips are very well marked, easily exchange, yet sit very well and do not wiggle.
I also used it with ASUS M50 laptop and it worked well. Got warmer than with VAIO notebook but still reasonably warm: original ASUS adapter warms up to approximately the same temperature. Plastic base that you use for cable management also serves as a way to insulate warm adapter from whatever surface you put it on. For stationary use one could probably use base to mount adapter on the wall or side of the desk.
My only complaint is that adapter produces a high-pitched sound as though some coil is lose. It could be that I am unlucky and got one with a manufacturing defect. Or it could be a "feature" of this product. The sound is not loud - you can only hear it in a quiet room. But it's there and can be annoying. Hence 4 stars rating.

This is a shame because the design & capabilities of this set are GREAT for road warriors (one small charger for phone and laptop in vehicle or on commercial power).
Lenovo won't honor the 1 year warranty unless you buy directly from [...] (per Lenovo support tickets 30THQSD and 30THMMJ). Amazon won't allow this to be returned for a full refund, or exchanged for a working unit because more than 30 days have passed since purchase. I can return to Amazon for a partial refund -- they will refund some part of $100 after I pay to send it back to them (who knows if they will pay $5 or $50).
All in all, this promising device is now a $100 paperweight. If you still want to buy one, spend an extra $20 to buy it directly from [...].

One Way Voltage Converter 220/240V to 110/120V AC - 200 Watt Review

(More customer reviews)Be very careful when approaching the load limit (200 watts) of this transformer/converter. After roughly two hours with an 181-watt (1.51 amp) load, one of my transformers overheated, melted, allowed a full 230 volt output surge for several seconds, and then blew the circuit breaker in my house. The unit remained extremely hot for several hours afterwards. In the meantime, I checked the load (which was resilient enough to be undamaged) with a Fluke multimeter to ensure it did not exceed 200 watts. The load remained steady at the level specified.
That said, the other two transformers purchased are performing admirably in less demanding, low wattage, applications. I'm temporarily residing overseas. Since it gets tiresome toting around (and expensive buying) larger transformers for every little task, the compact size and low price of this transformer is well appreciated.

DETERMINING TRANSFORMER REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEVICE YOU INTEND TO USE
After reading several reviews, it appears some do not understand the limits of transformers/converters. This small transformer is intended low wattage items, such as a small laptop or netbook, battery charger, small kitchen aid, electric shaver, and similar.
It is not intended for high wattage items like hair dryers, clothing irons, heaters, toasters, other household appliances, power tools, multiple items at the same time, and so on. Use of such high wattage items with this transformer will result in damage and could potentially cause injury or fire.
To determine the electrical input requirements of the 120v device you intend to use, look at the product label on that device. That label will express the input requirements in either watts or amps. The device plugged into this transformer should not exceed 200 watts or 1.66 amps - the input numbers should be equal to or lower than 200 watts or 1.66 amps.
If the input requirements exceed those numbers, use a larger transformer (qreater or equal to the numbers on the device) instead of this one.

Actually, based on my experience described in the first paragraph above, I'd personally recommend not using devices exceeding 150 watts or 1.25 amps. Even then, it would be wise to carefully monitor devices approaching those numbers for a while to ensure they will continue to operate safely.

(More customer reviews)This transformer has worked admirably so far. I used it on a trip to India, and it worked well. It doesn't make any noise while in use, and it seems to stay reasonably cool. Not like I'm drawing all that much wattage through it, but it seems to be just fine.
Just a few quibbles:
1. The 110-volt North American plug offered on the front of the unit has a spot for a grounding prong, but the unit itself is not grounded. I still cannot fathom the logic of that design choice. Especially in India, where European plugs are *required* to have a grounding prong. You can't get a plug like this one into the outlet without one; the outlets have an internal safety device that only opens when a grounding prong is inserted into the outlet. Sadly, the only way I could get this to work in India was to insert a pen in the grounding prong hole to release the safety and then insert the plug into the power holes.
2. The only justification I could find for not having a grounded unit is that the unit is fuse-protected. But they don't tell you what kind of fuse is required, and the fuse is located *inside* the unit, such that you would need a screwdriver to open the unit to replace the fuse. If it is going to be fuse-protected, the fuses must be user-replaceable, and need to be easily accessible without the use of tools, which I'd rather not carry around with me when I'm traveling internationally. (See EDIT below)
As far as the usability goes, it works as designed: it takes 230-240V power and steps it down to 110V power, offering you a North American power outlet. It's reasonably small and lightweight in comparison to some other transformers, but that's because it handles a much lower wattage. You have to be careful about the application that this will be used for: works well for laptops, phone chargers, electric razors, etc, but don't plug anything into it that draws over 200W, like your curling iron or hairdryer, as you'll fry the transformer instantly. And the lack of a grounded power plug and the internal fuse are poor design choices which nearly limits the functionality of the unit to the point where it's almost worth it to pay a little more for a better-designed unit.
For the price, it was worth it for me. Just make sure you understand the application for which it will be used before you buy it.
EDIT: I found out two new things about this unit that are very interesting.
1. There is NO INTERNAL FUSE, regardless of what the documentation says. Opening the unit up and poking around clearly reveals this.
2. The grounding prong hole on the front of the unit is not connected to anything on the inside; the unit does not ground the item plugged into it, nor does it attempt to.
So not only is the grounding plug on the front misleading, so is the documentation. As I mentioned earlier, for the price, it does what you'd expect. In other words, you get what you pay for.

(More customer reviews)I carry around two laptops so I thought this ultra compact adapter (and it's REALLY small by the way) would be a dream come true....Well, it's only partially come true.
The USB port on the side is great and was one of the top selling points for me as I have tons of USB charging cables for my mobile devices. Also as I mentioned, the size is fantastic, about half the size of my stock DELL AC adapter and comparable to my micro-sized Panasonic adapter.
The only negative was the voltage selection process. Instead of implementing a simple switch on the device to choose between the high and low voltage setting, they supply these tiny plastic micro-SD sized cards you have to keep swapping out in order to change the voltage (which I have to do when I swap this adapter between my two laptop). So not you have to carry around the tips (which is OK) but you also have to carry around the voltage selector micro-SD cards if you have to switch between multiple voltages. It's not a deal breaker and I love the size but it just seems like added complexity they could have gotten rid of.
If you're just buying this to replace your current adapter, it's a bit expensive but it's TINY and has the benefit of the USB port.

(More customer reviews)I bought this adapter to charge my digital camera in Poland. This adapter was fairly easy to use and convert plugs as needed. It's great that it goes both ways, for example if I wanted to use a European appliance in the US. I used it a few times with no problems.
Just make sure what you need is an adapter and not converter. This product will not convert voltage. Many battery chargers (cameras, laptops, etc) already convert voltage so all you need is an adapter. Just check the printed label on the cord.

Universal Mini USB Car Charger Adapter, Black Review

(More customer reviews)The adapter arrived just as it looks in the picture, and it sports a much better form-factor than the clunky alternatives found on Amazon. It's worth noting that the black circle next to the USB input is a blue LED indicator light, letting you know that the device has power. However, the blue light is rather bright. While I like the blue light, some might find it distracting when driving at night; it lights up a good bit of the car.
In my older Infiniti, I have to twist the adapter to find the sweet-spot to get it to hold a charge in the cigarette lighter. I think the problem may lie more with my car than the adapter, though. Once I find the sweet-spot, the adapter works just fine.
When I used the adapter in a 1996 Camry, I had a different result. The adapter worked just fine immediately. I tried twisting the unit to recreate the problem from the first car, but it never lost charge. I actually ran into an unexpected problem. The 1996 Camry has a recessed cigarette lighter, and the nice, small adapter fit into it absolutely flush -- so flush that I couldn't pull it out. I ended up having to loop string around the adapter and pull it out that way (worked like a charm).
The adapter seems to work just fine, and I have no problem recommending this for purchase -- just make sure your car doesn't have an overly-recessed lighter.

Kensington Travel Plug Adapter with USB Charger 33346 Review

This was the best of all the adapters I looked at, it has a simple compact design, and only three parts, two of which will usually be firmly attached to each other, so there's less to lose. Contrary to what some of the other reviews say, the USB charger WILL work with an iPod. As I write this I'm charging my 2nd gen iPod Nano with it. It's also not a voltage converter, but I think that would have added a lot of bulk, and all of the electronics I travel with are dual voltage anyway.
I would have given this 5 stars, but I've had a few minor issues with it:
1. It takes much too much force to plug in a grounded 3-prong US plug into the adapter, so much that I'm afraid I'll break it when I remove the plug. It works, but you have to force the round US ground pin into the rectangular UK ground hole, which is just slightly too small for it to fit easily. If the UK ground hole was slightly rounded or half a millimeter larger, it wouldn't have this problem.
2. You sometimes have to pull out the pins on the plug end with your fingers to get them to lock correctly. Otherwise they'll retract back into the adapter when you try to plug it in.
3. You can only awkwardly connect all three pieces together for transport, and you can't do it at all while you're using it. It would have been better if there was a slot or something where you could attach the unused part during use.
