(More customer reviews)I bought this power supply to replace one I couldn't find for my external hard drive and it worked great. Wouldn't you know, as soon as I received this replacement I found my original power supply.
Though there are many external power supplies, even some with various voltages including 12 volts, many were a bit short on the amperage they could supply. From what I read, 1.5 to 2 amps were required for an average hard drive, so this supply would give more than enough current as needed. Many of the generic power supplies were only rated for between 500 milliamps and 1 amp. The problem is that if they are designed to supply less current than the device draws, they may burn out or possibly cause problems with the device you plug them in to.
Of course, sometimes external hard drives vary in the adapters they use, but for the drives I have this power supply had the right specs and had the right connector to work. Getting a replacement from your original drive manufacturer can be a hassle and will probably be more expensive than getting this one as a replacement.
