When I purchased the camera, one of the points I had to consider was the need to USB charge it, for quite some time, and would lose the portability of the laptop if I were wired, even to a lightweight camera... and before check out the charger was offered as an accessory, and I thought about how it's not Panasonic, but got it anyway...
It's similar to the recharger that came with my Canon camera, that it has a retractable plug, and the small unit plugs directly into the wall without blocking other outlets, since it's a non polarized plug you can plug it in right-side up or upside down, no dangling wires... and when the red light turns green... it's done, and you can call everyone to get their picture taken....
It's lightweight and small, since I use the camera when I travel, and don't carry a computer with me and wouldn't even be able to USB recharge it. And one of the reasons I got the Panasonic is because it has an SD card and if it filled, you can get another SD card anywhere...
The only difference from the Canon recharger is that the arrow indicator on the battery goes face down, so just make sure the copper electrodes on the battery match up with the little prongs on recharger and it snaps right in.
And if you purchase a second battery, you can always have one ready in the event the battery in the camera exhausts while recording.
So... Did it work? Yes. Quite well.... Is it worth it?.... Yes.. (for me.)
And it was delivered a week before the camera, which I ordered at the same time...
I don't have a car, so I can offer no opinion on the car charging aspect.
